Adoption Process
Before You Adopt:
Choosing to adopt a feathered friend can be one of the most life-changing decisions- not only for you, but the bird as well! Before you put in an application, there a few questions you should ask yourself to check in on how committed you are:
- Can you afford to cater to all the basic needs of a pigeon?
- How will you be able to pay for veterinary fees (emergency or checkup) for your pigeon?
- Do you have existing pets or children to consider?
- Are you allowed to keep birds at your current address and will that change in the future?
- Will A pigeon fit into your lifestyle?
Along with these considerations, we have an adoption policy that you must comply with prior to application approval. This is to ensure pigeons are placed into appropriate homes that align with our standards of care.
All of our birds are quarantined for a minimum of 4 weeks and are health screened prior to adoption.
What are FFPR’s Housing Expectations?
Having an appropriate cage/avairy is crucial to the pigeon’s safety and well-being, we have a housing examples document to help out new adopters with creating your bird’s cage.
Adoption process:
Thank you for considering adopting from FFPR!
Once you have expressed interest in a bird, we ask that you formally apply to adopt via our adoption application form (this can be done ahead of time)
From there we will work with the adopter to find a bird that suits their lifestyle, and organise a meet and greet at our shelter. We offer continuous support post-adoption and are always available for help or questions.
For any questions in regards to adoption, please reach out to adoptions@frecklesfellowship.org or reach out on social media.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you ship? Freckle’s Fellowship Pigeon Rescue can adopt to people in SA, VIC, NSW and QLD. We transport pigeons from Melbourne along the coast as far as Adelaide, SA and Rockhampton, QLD and in between. At the moment, we cannot transport to WA or NT and do not offer shipping internationally. Any questions regarding transport and related fees can be sent to info@frecklesfellowship.org
I want to adopt but your policy states x, can you make an exception? Our rules and policies around adoption are there to ensure our pigeons go to homes that are adequate and align with our values. As such, we do not make exceptions to these standards.
To apply do I need to adopt right away and/or have a bird in mind? Not at all! Applying to adopt is to simply get approval for adoption at any time in the future. Often, the application process can go over the course of a few days/weeks, and as such, sometimes within that time period the bird you are interested in has been adopted by someone else, so we encourage potential adopters to keep an open mind and adopt in advance to have the application approved in preparation for adoption.
How much does it cost to own a pigeon? We have created a rough price tally to help inform prospective adopters. Whilst this is tailored to the costs of setting up for a pigeon indoors, majority of it can be applicable to aviary owners.
