Foster A Pigeon
Why Foster?
Whilst our primary goal is placing pigeons in permanent forever homes, we also have birds needing foster care. Foster carers provide a temporary home for our rescued pigeons whilst they wait for an adoptive home. Fostering is also a great way to experience pet pigeons without the lifelong commitment if you are a bit unsure about adopting or have a lifestyle that isn’t compatible for keeping them long term. Fostering is also incredibly rewarding, being able to watch a timid animal truly shine and develop in an environment where they are safe and loved.
Some reasons pigeons need foster homes are:
- They are stressed in a shelter environment
- They need some help socialising and transitioning to a home environment
- They would benefit from special 1:1 care
- It frees up space for more rescued pigeons to come in!
Foster Responsibilities
Fostering a pigeon from Freckle’s Fellowship involves all standard responsibilities for caring for an animal. We ask that you take a pigeon(s) into your home and treat them as your family. Pigeons are generally fostered for as long as it takes to find their adoptive home, due to many factors this timeframe can vary significantly, ranging from 1 month to 1 year.
Prior to foster, our birds are health screened, vaccinated and quarantined for a minimum of 4 weeks and come to your home with an ID tag and food. We can loan a cage and cage supplies, but please be aware that due to resource constrains this is not always available. Freckle’s Fellowship covers all veterinary expenses.
Foster-To-Adopt
Many people choose the foster-to-adopt route. This is a good way to see whether a pigeon is a good fit for you and your family before completing the adoption process.
